Introduction

Traffic Signaling, identified within the MITRE ATT&CK framework as technique T1205, involves attackers embedding signals within network traffic or legitimate communication channels to facilitate command and control (C2) operations. This technique leverages seemingly benign, legitimate network protocols or services to disguise malicious traffic, making it challenging for defenders to detect malicious activities.   • Command and Control (C2) Stage: Establishing covert communication channels between compromised hosts and attacker-controlled infrastructures.

  • Exfiltration Stage: Transmitting sensitive or confidential data covertly from compromised systems to external attacker-controlled servers.

  • Defense Evasion: Avoiding detection by security systems that rely on signature-based or anomaly-based detection mechanisms.

  • Lateral Movement: Coordinating instructions across multiple compromised endpoints to facilitate lateral movement within a targeted network.
