Fast Flux DNS (T1568.001) is a sub-technique within the MITRE ATT&CK framework categorized under Dynamic Resolution (T1568). It refers to a method attackers use to rapidly change DNS records to obscure malicious infrastructure. Through constant rotation of IP addresses associated with a single domain name, adversaries make it challenging for defenders to block or take down malicious servers, thus maintaining persistence and operational continuity. Fast Flux DNS techniques are commonly leveraged by threat actors to evade detection, complicate attribution, and ensure the longevity of their malicious activities.

Fast Flux DNS involves rapidly and continuously changing DNS records, typically the IP addresses associated with a specific domain name. This rapid cycling of IP addresses is usually facilitated by a network of compromised hosts ("flux agents") or dedicated malicious infrastructure. Technical details include:

  • Single Flux:

    • Frequent changing of the A records (IPv4 addresses) or AAAA records (IPv6 addresses) of a domain.
