Introduction

Protocol Impersonation (T1001.003) is categorized under the MITRE ATT&CK framework as a sub-technique of Data Obfuscation. It involves adversaries disguising malicious communications as legitimate network protocols to evade detection and blend their activities with normal network traffic. Attackers commonly exploit standard communication protocols such as HTTP, HTTPS, DNS, SMTP, and FTP, making it challenging for defenders to distinguish malicious traffic from legitimate traffic.

Protocol Impersonation involves adversaries crafting malicious network traffic to mimic legitimate protocol behavior, structure, and patterns.
