Introduction

Environmental Keying () is a sub-technique under the MITRE ATT&CK Framework's Defense Evasion tactic. This technique involves attackers configuring malware or malicious payloads to execute only under specific environmental conditions. Attackers utilize environmental keying to evade detection, sandboxing, and analysis by ensuring their malicious code runs only on targeted systems and environments, thereby reducing the likelihood of detection in automated analysis systems or unintended targets.

Environmental Keying relies on conditional checks embedded within malware or scripts to verify specific environmental attributes before executing malicious payloads. Attackers typically implement checks against:

  • System hostname or domain: Malware verifies if the infected system matches specific hostnames or domain names.

  • Geographic location: Attackers may use geo-IP checks to ensure the malware runs only in targeted regions or countries.
